All of us are no doubt interested in reading and understanding more about major illnesses that could affect us. We spend a lot of time and efforts in trying to prevent falling prey to diseases caused by diabetes, blood pressure, obesity and other lifestyle diseases. However one area that we generally tend to ignore or pay no attention to is our dental health. If you were to ask people about dental diseases, they will either draw a blank or at the most remember dental decay. However it is quite important to understand the various types of diseases that affect the mouth, the teeth and the gums so as to be able to take preventive actions wherever possible. However we are not referring to the musculoskeletal or structural problems with mouth, gums or bone and tooth structure when we talk about dental diseases. These diseases are caused by fungus, bacteria as well as other micro organisms.
Normally in infants we come across minor infection known as Thrush. If the baby suffers from any viral infection then you get to see a creamy white plaque over the lining of the mouth. With a soft piece of cloth you can easily wipe off the plaque. After wiping out the plaque you will notice that the skin underneath is inflamed and reddish in color. Thrush is easily treated with the help of antibiotics.
Adults normally fall prey to fungal infection called pharyngeal candidacies which forms yeast like growth due to infection in the throat. Most often asthmatic patients who use steroids and the AIDS patients are prone to this infection.
One other very common fungal infection that we generally get to see amongst adults is the infection around the corners of lips called as Angular Cheilitis. The reasons for this fungal infection are attributed to wet and moist skin as well as the winter weather. This infection is not contagious and is easily treated with antibiotics. However sometimes it might take a while for the infection to be eradicated.
Besides fungal infections, you also find viral infections caused in the mouth. Hairy Leukoplakia is one such viral infection that affects and causes a hairy coating to grow on the lateral border of the tongue and cannot be easily wiped off. Though not painful, the look of the tongue can cause revulsion in the people.
Many elderly and old persons as well as AIDS infected persons fall prey to Herpes Zoster which is also known locally as singles. The virus is the same which also causes chickenpox in the individuals. If a person has had chicken pox in the young age, then chances are that the virus lies dormant in the body system for several years until one day it makes its reappearance when the body immunity is relatively down.
Along a single nerve, the rashes appear on one side of the face in this case. The infection can be very painful and lasting over a few weeks. Once cured of the infection, it can resurface once again sometime in future.
If you maintain good body health with very strong immunity and inculcate very good hygiene, then you would be able to keep the virus and fungus at bay.
