Microsoft announced Wednesday that they would be launching the Surface Duo, a new smartphone, on September 10th. The American tech giant has set the price for the new dual-screen phone at around US$1400 upon release.
Microsoft has been teasing the new device since October of last year. This marks Microsoft’s First Smartphone since the failure of the Windows Phone in 2017. Microsoft has been trying to make it known that the Duo is not a phone, but insists that it belongs to its own category. This sentiment is most noticeable in the branding. “Surface” is the same brand name that Microsoft uses for its Chromebook equivalent, a line of high-end laptops and tablets designed to showcase Microsoft technology and software.
The foldability of the device is not just a novelty with the Duo. The trailer released on the Surface youtube channel shows that the foldability will be able to be used like a split screen function. Meaning you can listen to spotify while browsing the web, or watch Twitch while playing the same game as the streamer.
The Duo enters the market along with two other products. Namely the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Motorola Razr. We don’t know a lot about Samsung’s foldable, but we do know quite a lot about Motorolla’s and Microsofts.
First off, both devices run off of Google’s Android OS. Windows and Devices chief Panos Panay stated in a press briefing Wednesday that the decision to use Android was made to allow for mobile apps to run easier. The device that is slated for the September 10th release is 1,399 USD, and has 128 Gigabytes (GB) of storage, and a 256 GB version is set to be released at a currently unknown date. The Razr however, has 128 GB of storage, and has a price point of 1,499 USD. Unlike the Fold, which we know to have 5G compatibility, the Razr and the Duo do not have 5G yet. Both companies said this was done to conserve battery, but that they have plans to release 5G compatible versions later.
Where can you get a Surface Duo? Microsoft is allowing for pre-orders to be placed through AT&T, the Official Online Store, and Best Buy..
